Population Paroxysm

The Major's been round again, fuming about immigration.

Did I know how many people came into the UK in the quarter century before New Labour took the reins?

According to the Major, it was a net zero.

No, that can't be, I said. What about all that economic growth we had under Thatch? Everybody knows you can't have growth without immigration- the government and the IPPR keep telling us.

But having consulted the Office for National Statistics, it seems the Major's right. We managed all that Tory growth with zero net immigration. Specifically, between 1971 and 1997, net immigration was minus 5,000- ie we actually lost people.

Somehow, that didn't stop real GDP increasing by 80%.

How peculiar.
