Joe Public- "I know you. You're Jeremy Paxman! You used to be on the TV. You used to be big!"
La Paxa- "I am Big! It's the pictures that got small!"
Poor Jeremy is bemoaning the "dumbing down" of Newsnight. He's long been too big for "the show", and earlier this week he signed off with:
"That's all from Newsnight tonight. Martha [Kearney] is being punished for some offence in a previous life by presenting tomorrow's programme.
"In the meantime, it's all available on the website, along with the editor's pathetic pleas for you to send us some bits of your old memories and the like, so we can become the BBC's version of Animals Do the Funniest Things. Goodnight."
Something must be done. We've all been extremely fortunate that Jeremy has been prepared to present Newnight for so long. The £800 grand pa he gets for his three nights a week is a pittance for such a shining star. And I have long been appalled that we've let him down by turning off in droves.
We really must make more of an effort. Just because we can watch all those more entertaining digital channels, and just because Sky News is often a better alternative at 10.30, and just because we now have 24/7 internet Iain Dale, it doesn't mean we should desert Jeremy.
Remember- he's A STAR.
PS The BBC's ludicrous mega-salaries for its "stars" (Wossy is getting £18 mil) are reportedly to be investigated by the National Audit Office. Good thing too. But unfortunately we poor schmuks who pay for it all will not be allowed to see the results. That's because unlike other government quangos, the BBC has always been excused investigation by the NAO and the Public Accounts Committee. There is absolutely no justification for that, and it needs changing urgently. Still, with luck, the NAO report will be leaked anyway by some disenchanted BBC apparachik who thinks everyone should be paid the same.
