Glasgay! (16 October – 12 November 2006) sounds great. Apart from being a brilliant name for "Scotland's annual celebration of queer culture", it's obviously a laugh, with previous years' shows including such goodies as Deep Rimming in Poplar, Balletstar Galactica, and Four Poofs and A Piano. All of which must be worth of a few quid of anyone's money.
Ah. Well. When we say anyone's money, obviously we mean anyone actually attending. We don't mean taxpayers who are never intending to go anywhere near it.
Unfortunately, taxpayers are the very people who are being asked...well, no, made to pay. According to quango Events Scotland, they're stumping up £25,000 of "their" taxpayers' funds, the Glasgow City Marketing Board are stumping up £25,000 of "their" taxpayers' funds, the Scottish Arts Council are stumping up £35,000 0f "their" taxpayers' funds, and Glasgow City Council are stumping up an undisclosed amount of "their" taxpayers' funds.
Overall, various quangos and councils are stumping up £200 grand. Of our money.
There certainly needs to be some deep rimming somewhere.
