GCSE Bullshit: Summer 2006
Question 1
Take a look at the following exhibits and then tick the statement that you think explains them:
i) Official statistics clearly showing improved exam results (Source: DfES Annual Report):
ii) Biased rightwing newspaper report (Daily Mail 9.8.2006):
"Half of private schools are ditching GCSEs for a tougher exam modelled on the old O-level. The exams, known as International GCSEs (IGCSEs) were developed primarily for schools overseas. Independent schools say the alternative qualification is better preparation for A-levels since questions are more open-ended, the syllabuses cover topics in more depth and they avoid 'tedious' GCSE coursework. State schools receive funding to enter their pupils only for exams approved by Whitehall and IGCSEs are not among these qualifications."
iii) Biased rightwing private school headmaster (Martin Stephen, High Master of St Paul's School, London):
"GCSEs are to real science what baby food is to steak and chips. They will bore the pants off many students, not inflame them with a new love of science."
Now tick the statement you think best explains these contradictions:
A. Biased rightwing newspapers and biased rightwing private school teachers ignore the real facts
B. The privileged upper classes don't want to see decent hardworking kids succeed
C. Everybody is entitled to 5 A-C grades and it's grossly unfair that they're rationed.
D. It's not fair that posh kids should get featherbedded with harder exams- private education should be abolished
